Make Your Own Miracle: Surviving Cancer
Inspirational stories of real people who overcame incredible odds

“There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger.  True courage is in facing danger when you are afraid.” - The Wizard of Oz

(June, 2005)  Travel with author Paul Huff on a journey into the lives of 55 amazing people who have heard the words "you have cancer" – and lived, despite being told their prognosis was grim and their chances of survival were slight. Hear their voices as they tell their stories. What you’ll hear will change the way you see the world – and what you believe is possible. Make Your Own Miracle: Surviving Cancer (Southern Mountains Press; 2004) written by Paul Huff with Julie Valeant Yenichek and Kim Huff is rooted in the power of the human mind and spirit and finds the common threads that achieve the impossible in the face of impossible odds.

Huff's connection to cancer is a very real one. In 1986, his wife of 19 years was diagnosed with the disease and died just eight months later. The gripping experience left Paul forever changed. "I saw how my wife's dogged determination and willpower fell short in her struggle. It made me think - and think long and hard - about the way I looked at things, about what I believed," says Huff, “I came away from her death with a new perspective of life. I saw that ultimately willpower was not enough. There had to be something better.”

Can we really make our own miracles?
If a miracle represents some outcome or opportunity we did not originally believe was possible, what happens if we change what we believe is possible? If we start redefining what's possible in our minds and hearts, if we focus on believing anything is possible, can we perhaps really make our own miracles?

What Paul Huff discovered about miracles
Paul Huff and his research team set out to learn more. They scoured the country to find people who had survived the often doom-filled prognosis of cancer. As the stories accumulated, Paul and his team poured over them, absorbed and fascinated by what they read.

"...We found no one answer; no one right way. However, we did discover common threads running through most of these accounts. These threads can serve as guideposts when dealing with life-threatening cancers...or in fact whenever we find ourselves in any ‘against the odds' situation, disease-related or not."

"We found six common characteristics these remarkable people shared. It made us wonder what if other people said yes to these characteristics, adopted these beliefs and attitudes. What "miraculous" effects might be possible?"

Make Your Own Miracle: Surviving Cancer is a life-affirming book that just might challenge what you believe is possible. “Whether you have a direct connection with cancer or not, you’ll find Make Your Own Miracle an uplifting experience that will cause you to take stock and hopefully take control of your life,” says Huff.
