FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bestselling Cookbook Author & Illustrator Mollie Katzen to speak at
Los Angeles Unified School District’s
Nutrition Network
Event

Inspiring kids to make healthy food choices is key to improving their overall performance.

Painting by Mollie Katzen © Tante Malka, Inc.(Los Angeles, CA, Sept. 2003) Award-winning cookbook author and illustrator Mollie Katzen, widely credited with moving healthful cooking from the fringes of American society to the mainstream, will speak to over 1,000 Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) teachers, cafeteria staff and administrators about inspiring children to make healthy food choices.  Katzen is the author of Mollie Katzen’s Sunlight Café, with over 400 nutritious breakfast recipes; the classic Moosewood Cookbook; and the bestselling children’s cookbooks, Pretend Soup and Honest Pretzels. Named by Health Magazine as one of the “Five Women Who Changed the Way We Eat,” she is a charter member of the Harvard University School of Public Health Nutrition Roundtable, and has just been appointed consultant to Harvard University Dining Services.

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Nutrition Network’s Kick-Off Event will be held on Saturday, September 20th beginning at 8 a.m. at the Wilshire Grand Hotel & Centre in the Pacific Ballroom, 2nd floor, 930 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90017.

The U.S. Surgeon General’s Office released data in 2001 showing that childhood obesity has tripled over the last 30 years, to over 15% of children and teens. By establishing healthy eating habits early, children can avoid a number of health problems, including Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Good nutrition is not only key to healthy bodies, but also to healthy minds and good concentration.  This is especially important for school-age kids who are establishing lifelong habits, beginning now. By using innovative, hands-on learning techniques, Nutrition Network encourages children to experience the many benefits of five servings of fruits and vegetables and sixty minutes of physical activity each day. This event introduces schools to the Nutrition Network and the many programs it offers.
