ONE STROKE-TWO SURVIVORS
The Incredible Journey of Berenice and Herb Kleiman
By Berenice Kleiman with Comments by Herb Kleiman

The dramatic account of a couple’s enduring love amid a struggle against adversity

(January 2006) “Life can turn on a dime,” and few of us are prepared. For Berenice and Herb Kleiman, life spun 180 degrees, leaving their lives changed forever. Married more than 40 years, they were parents, grandparents, and business partners leading a solid and successful life. Both were vibrant, energetic, highly educated, and involved in their community and professional organizations.

ONE STROKE-TWO SURVIVORS: The Incredible Journey of Berenice and Herb Kleiman (Crile Books, Cleveland Clinic Press; January 2006) by Berenice Kleiman asks: How prepared are you for a family health disaster that burdens you with responsibilities you had never imagined—or thought you could handle? Anyone who reads this first hand account will NEVER say, “Oh, that can’t happen to me!” This book is unique not just because of the powerful narrative but because each chapter ends with “lessons learned” and how to be prepared.

On July 14, 2001 Herb Kleiman suffered a massive stroke, incapacitating him almost totally. A serene journey through life was now suddenly fraught with seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Despite having no experience and absolutely no idea what she really faced, Berenice took on the role of caregiver, knowing, also that Herb had only a limited window of time to recover as much of his former skills as possible.

With time as their enemy, ONE STROKE-TWO SURVIVORS is a riveting, page-turning story of the couple’s unrelenting drive, the pain, frustration, and emotional rollercoaster ride they endured. It is also an account of the very real world and the challenges that health-care providers face every day. But, above all, the book is a tale about the unshakable love that has kept two individuals going.

ONE STROKE-TWO SURVIVORS is published by Crile Books, an imprint of the Cleveland Clinic Press. Crile Books recount dramatic stories of people whose lives are suddenly turned upside down and inside out by a catastrophic medical event. As either first person memoirs or books recounting patient experiences by Cleveland Clinic experts, Crile Books tackle issues that most of us would rather ignore until they happen to us. Through these riveting accounts, Crile Books also explore the issues that we face worldwide in health-care delivery. Crile Books represent the spirit and desire of The Clinic's founders’ approach to patient care which helped create one of the preeminent treatment and research institutions in the world.

Praise for ONE STROKE-TWO SURVIVORS:

“...An engrossing account of a difficult journey, which describes the long path of stroke recovery. Reading this book, one feels as if one is ringside, cheering when there is progress and worried when there are setbacks. . . .The reader gets a real education about health-care systems as well as an insight into day-to-day life with significant disability.”
—Elizabeth Dreben, Ph.D., Rehabilitation Psychologist, Dept. of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, MetroHealth Medical Center, and Assistant Professor, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine

“…I know how valuable your book will be, not only to survivors of stroke and their families, but to health-care providers who should be ever mindful of the human side of their work: “In the sufferer, see only the human being.” Your book will remind people that they are not lost, for it will show the way.”
—Kathleen Michael, Ph.D., RN, CRRN, Program Manager, The Claude D. Pepper Center, Geriatric Research Education Clinical Center, University of Maryland
