PROSTATE CANCER: A Cleveland Clinic Guide
By Eric Klein, M.D.
A Timely Guide for Reducing the Risks and Successfully Treating Prostate Cancer

(March 2006) PROSTATE CANCER: A Cleveland Clinic Guide by Eric Klein, M.D. gives prostate cancer patients what they need most: substantive information from an authoritative source that is trusted by people all over the world — The Cleveland Clinic. This Cleveland Clinic Guide is one of a series of new books written by physicians from the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic. The Clinic’s experts view early detection of prostate cancer and reduction of risk as vital. PROSTATE CANCER: A Cleveland Clinic Guide outlines what all men, even those as young as 21, must do to reduce their risk of prostate cancer; for those who have been diagnosed with the disease, it outlines successful treatments.

If men in 2006 have a single common fear, it is prostate cancer, easily the most common cancer in males over age 50. It will strike more than 230,000 this year — and this is only those men whose prostate cancer has been identified. There are undoubtedly many in this age group who have prostate cancer right now and don’t know it. Overall, men have a 17 percent chance of developing the disease and a mortality rate of about 3 percent. It’s important to note that of all the cancers that beset men, prostate cancer is perhaps the most curable when detected early. When the cancer is still confined to the prostate, the five-year survival rate is 100 percent, and the 10-year survival rate is 75 percent. Compare this to lung cancer, where the overall five-year survival rate is less than 15 percent.

PROSTATE CANCER: A Cleveland Clinic Guide explains the anatomy and function of the prostate gland and provides a thorough overview of prostate cancer. Topics covered include:

  • Risk Factors

  • Incidence (epidemiology)

  • Symptoms

  • Diagnosis

  • Progression (if untreated)

  • DRE Grading

  • Radical Prostatectomy

  • Nerve-Sparing Procedures

  • Laser Therapy

  • Robot-Assisted Cryogenic Therapy

  • Radio Frequency Ablation

  • External Beam Radiation

  • Brachytherapy

  • Chemotherapy

  • Gene Therapy

  • Diet

  • Supplements

  • Other Prostate Diseases
