Essential
Information for Those Considering Weight-Loss Surgery
(March 2006)
BARIATRIC SURGERY & WEIGHT MANAGEMENT: A Cleveland Clinic
Guide (Cleveland Clinic Press; May 2006) by Phillip
Schauer, M.D. is one of a series of new books written by
physicians from the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic. It
provides a straightforward clear examination and answers the
most frequently asked questions about bariatric surgery and
weight management.
The mission of the
Cleveland Clinic Press (CCP) is to increase health
literacy and dispel myths and misinformation about medicine,
health care, and treatment. CCP publishes nonfiction consumer
books and other media for the medical, health, nutrition, and
exercise markets, providing the most useful and authoritative
information vetted by the experts of The Cleveland Clinic.
Bariatric surgery
alters the digestive system — through creation of a smaller or
“restrictive” stomach, a decrease in food absorption, or both,
in order to achieve weight loss. For many, it is the single
most effective long-term weight-loss approach: Depending on
the specific surgery under-gone, patients can lose up to 80
percent of their excess body weight.
BARIATRIC
SURGERY & WEIGHT MANAGEMENT: A Cleveland Clinic Guide by
Phillip Schauer, M.D., includes case studies and
illustrations, gives potential bariatric patients what they
need most: substantive information from a source that is
trusted by people all over the world — The Cleveland Clinic.
The Clinic’s
experts view bariatric surgery as only part of an over-all
weight management program, a “tool” for weight loss rather
than a quick-fix. While bariatric surgery is the single most
effective approach to long-term weight-loss, it has potential
complications, as any form of surgery does. However, for many,
the benefits — staggering weight loss, improved health, and a
better overall quality of life — far outweigh the risks.
