ARTHRITIS: A Cleveland Clinic
Guide
By John D. Clough, M.D.
An Indispensable Source for
Understanding and Treating the Many Types of Arthritis
(November 2005)
ARTHRITIS: A Cleveland Clinic Guide by John D. Clough,
M.D is one of a series of new books written by physicians from
the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic. It provides a
straightforward and clear examination of arthritis and serves
as a complete home reference for anyone.
The mission of the
Cleveland Clinic Press (CCP) is to increase health
literacy and dispel myths and misinformation about medicine,
health care, and treatment. CCP publishes nonfiction consumer
books and other media for the medical, health, nutrition, and
exercise markets, providing the most useful and authoritative
information vetted by the experts of The Cleveland Clinic.
Between 10 and 20
percent of all Americans will suffer from some form of
arthritis! Despite the hundreds of prescription and
over-the-counter products that target “the aches and pains of
arthritis,” arthritis itself is often generalized and is
frequently misunderstood. Ironically, as the reader will learn
in ARTHRITIS: A Cleveland Clinic Guide, arthritis is
not really a collection of “aches and pains,” but, in general,
is a result of inflammation occurring in various joints. It is
also not simply a single entity treated by medication or
physical therapy.
There are dozens
of types of arthritis, some serious and life-threatening.
Figuring out what type of arthritis a person has is key to the
treatment and the overall risk of disability a patient may
have. In fact, there are certain disorders (e.g., fibromyalgia)
that are often mistaken for arthritis. Dr. Clough, after
nearly four decades of work and research as a rheumatologist,
has produced this fundamental guide to understanding and
treating arthritis accordingly and has clarified the
misconceptions and generalizations about the disease.
ARTHRITIS: A
Cleveland Clinic Guide examines arthritis through the eyes
of typical patients. In it, the reader will learn:
-
The many forms
of arthritis
-
How to seek
proper treatment
-
How to
understand different medications and side effects
-
How to deal with
emotional reactions that frequently occur
-
Who is at risk
and why
-
How to assess
treatment options
-
The long-term
prognosis and what can be done about it
ARTHRITIS: A
Cleveland Clinic Guide also contains medication tables and
is fully indexed and illustrated.
